Deegan's First Day in the NICU

Mr. Deegan is about 20 hours old. He is doing much better today so we are thrilled!

I just love his little feet and hands! Not sure how big most newborns feet are but his is about the size of my pinkie finger.

Sad little foot :(

This was first thing this morning. He was basically doing the same as last night. Not any worse or better. They ordered another chest xray which he HATED. I was pretty tired from only sleeping 3 1/2 hours and was feeling very emotional. I held it together but was so sad looking at him and seeing him stressed and mad and I couldn't do anything. They got him settled down though. I know my hands are obviously still puffy and manly looking but I wanted to give a better idea on his size. Did it work? :)

Here he is all chilled out! His chest xray stilled showed stuff in his lungs. They debated intabating (sp?) him or not. They said he was right on the fence. After my pediatricain talked with another doctor, they decided to intabate him (put the tube down his throat to help him breath) just long enough to give him the drug surfactant and then they would take it out. This made me feel better that he would not have to stay on it very long. I decided I didn't want to watch so I went back to my room and waited for Eric. (I sent him home to get a good nights sleep.)

Here is Deegan's suite! Pretty sure we could stay at the Plaza in New York for cheaper but that's okay!

Here is the monitor we watch to make sure he isn't breathing to fast and that his heart rate and blood gases are looking good. The middle one is his breathing and needs to be between 20-60 and the bottom one above 90 or so I believe. :)

Here he is when me and Eric came back a little later. Imagine our happiness to see no tube down his throat and no CPAP! Just a regular nose canula (I am truely not a nurse so to those of you that are, sorry if I slaughter terms! :)

I just LOVE this face! And I can actually see it! He has this bean bag thing on him for comfort but mainly to help keep his mouth closed so the oxygen doesn't go in his nose and straight out his mouth.

AHHHH!!! I am so in love! Doesn't he look so much better?!

He looks like he has a little piggie nose. But that poor nose has been through a lot. He looks totally different to me in this pic. Maybe its the angle?

Holding him for the FIRST time! I was in heaven. It didn't last long enough but hopefully I will get to later today! Eric still hasn't held him because they didn't want to over stress him. He was perfectly relaxed and calm in mommy's arms.

After the put him back in they started him on some protein mixture and some fat. YUM! He has only been on sugar water so far. As long as things keep looking good I should get to try to feed him tonight. Hopefully it works out! If not we will try a bottle and if that doesn't work, we will just feed him my milk through a tube. At least he will be getting mom's nutrients!

They like to put him in different positions since this helps with his respiratory. I thought he looked so cute all curled up on his tummy!

So there is the latest on our little guy! He is doing better and our prayers are being answered. I will be discharged tomorrow afternoon but will do what they call Hotel stay where I will move to a room farther done the hall and I can use it to sleep and shower and whatever else since I have a baby in the NICU. It will be nice to be close to him and not have to go back and forth between here and home as much. I won't get waited on and food brought to me but thats okay. :) And with Eric starting a new job in SLC on Monday, it will make things easier. I will fill you in on that part of news later! Let's just say Friday the 13th was an eventful one for us!

Thanks so much for all of your wishes and comments! I loved them!!!! Keep em coming!

Oh he is so cuuuute!!! I couldn't watch if they had to shove a tube down Savannah's throat either.... it's so sad when your baby is sad or hurting. I'm glad you got to hold him though! It makes it feel like it's all worth it!! We'll keep praying for you guys and I hope he just keeps getting better and better for you! The sooner you can get that little angel home the better!!

Hey Brooke...Aunt Nancy here. Glad to hear and see good news. Hope you are getting more rest tonight. That's really important. Taking care of yourself so that you will be able to take care of him when it's your turn. Deegan is a cute little guy! But then with you two for parents he just has to be, right? Love you.

Hey Brooke,

What suite are you in? Gabe was in Room #3 and I also did hotel stay. It was awesome. Good luck with the NICU experience and just remember, it WILL end and you will all be home together soon. In the meantime, the NICU nurses are awesome! They are so caring and helpful. I have lots of newborn size clothes (5-8 lbs) so if you would like to borrow any, just call and I will send them over. Good luck with everything, he looks very cute! Also congrats to Eric on the job!
Love, Tasha
